The PFAS Ban Red Lines: Fluorine-Free Grease-Resistant Alternatives for Molded Pulp

The global phase-out of fluorinated chemistry: 12 US states (including California, New York and Washington) and the EU REACH proposal are moving to ban PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in food-contact packaging outright.

1. The Compliance Red Lines

RegionLaw / StandardTesting ThresholdStatus
California, USAAB 1200 / SB 54Total organic fluorine (TOF) < 100 ppm; deliberate addition of PFAS strictly prohibitedIn force
New York State, USAEnvironmental Conservation LawFood packaging containing any intentionally added PFAS is banned in fullIn force

2. Fluorine-Free Alternatives for Molded Pulp and Food-Service Paperboard

Conventional grease-resistant paper bags, burger wrap and bagasse food boxes rely heavily on fluorinated grease-proofing agents. Three industrially mature routes deliver fluorine-free grease resistance:

1. Aqueous Acrylic Emulsion Coatings

  • How it works: A water-based polymer forms a dense film over the paper fibers, blocking grease molecules from penetrating.
  • Environmental profile: Passes repulpability testing β€” coated paper goes straight back into the pulper without disrupting waste-paper recycling.

2. Fluorine-Free Greaseproof Agents Added In-Stock (AKD / Modified PVA Blends)

  • Where it is used: Bagasse and bamboo-pulp molded single-use food boxes.
  • Performance: Resists hot water (above 85Β°C) and hot oil (Kit rating 6–8), comfortably covering the 30-minute food-delivery use case.

3. Bio-Based Barrier Coatings (PLA / PHA Laminated Paper)

  • Biodegradable with good heat resistance β€” well suited to high-grease hot and cold drink cups and salad boxes.
